Choices

Why would anyone obsess over whom to vote for: neither Joe Miller with his commitment to destroy Social Security and Medicare, eliminate unemployment insurance (altho his wife was on it when he had to fire her) eliminate the Dept of Education and destroy every form of our government; nor Lisa Murkowski with her blind obedience to the Republicans in Congress. She voted against the Education Jobs bill, the HealthCare bill (although she has Federal health care), the unemployment benefits extension, disclosure of large contributions to the election process and voted for every bill that helped the oil companies, etc. She had no Senatorial experience until her daddy put her in the Senate and her Party fired her, too boot.

We now have a real Alaskan candidate, Scott Mc Adams, who has proven executive ability and knows how to compromise until he made Sitka a model city. He is a family man, was a teacher, a deckhand in the Bering Sea and a mayor, who knows how to make a living. As a bonus, Scott would be in a party that doesn’t say “no” indiscriminately but allows its members to think for themselves and do what is best for his constituents.

Social Security Myth

The assault, on Social Security, that I told you about in July has begun. Let me repeat. There is no Social Security crisis ! There is no Social Security crisis ! Do not let the neo-cons scare you.
There will be enough money ( a $4.6 Trillion surplus) to pay out all the scheduled benefits until 2023. After 2023, Social Security will still be able to pay out at least 75% of the scheduled benefits – and that is if there are no changes.

However the government is not sitting still on this and is working on ways to improve that situation. If the very rich paid all their taxes, on all their income, Social Security would be sustainable for the rest of time. As of now, people only pay Social Security taxes on the first $106,000 of their income. That is a pittance on those “golden parachute” CEO’s and their heirs, who manage to get away with not paying their fair share. If this cap of $106.000 were eliminated,
there would be no more financial problems for Medicare or Social Security.

The Social Security Trust Fund consists of U.S. Treasury Bonds, which are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. The federal government has never missed a single interest payment on its debts. However, if the funds had been put into the stock market as President Bush and his cronies wanted to do, what a disaster that would have been when the Market crashed !! Remember that when you are told that we need to privatize Social Security, because that is what would have happened to you.

Another myth that is being foisted on you is that Social Security adds to the deficit. That is impossible because by law, Social Security funds are separate from the budget, and must pay its own way. Social Security can not add one cent to the deficit. Do not be taken in by these lies that are being told to you. Social Security has been running surpluses for the last 25 years. Conservatives hate Social Security because its success nullifies their claim that government is the problem. And yet , in a disaster, the Federal government is the first they come to for help.

Pork ??

Keeping the “pork” coming home to Alaska – a good idea or just plain selfishness?
Keeping our congress persons in office for thirty years – a good idea or just fostering more power hungry, pompous, pretentious, prevaricating, unprincipled profligates?
Alaska now has the reputation of being the richest state in the union as far as per capita income goes – but is this true?
Although we get our yearly dividends as an owner state – is this true?
Why then do we still have some of the largest per capita homeless population? the most rapes, incest, and drug use per capita ? – Is this good?
I, for one don’t think so.
Why do we allow the most corrupt Supreme Court to tell us that corporations are people?
Think people ! Don’t allow the lies to obfuscate your minds !!
At my age, I won’t be seeing the destruction of our democratic system, or feeling the loss of our freedoms, one-by-one. But you, who have children and grandchildren, wake up, please.

Evaluating Health Care

There is a Washington DC based non- partisan think tank “Commonwealth Fund” that has a report out evaluating the Health Care systems of seven major industrialized countries. The study ranks the United States "dead last" in the quality, efficiency, and equity of its health care system, and that Americans pay roughly twice as much for health care as residents of other nations, and get poorer outcomes.

What this study highlights is that Americans have been totally misused - for the decades since the Great Reagan Deregulation - by for-profit health insurance companies. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been diverted from our health care system over the years by for-profit health insurance companies, putting that money into the pockets of wealthy stockholders and top executives and corporate jets, instead of paying for health care for their customers. Other countries that forbid by law, for-profit companies from offering basic healthcare insurance have better outcomes and lower costs.
We need a single-payer health-care system in this country, and it could be done easily and with only 50 votes in the Senate if we just fulfilled LBJ's original vision for Medicare by doing away with the age limit on it and making it available to all people and all employers.

Health care today, costs an average of $12,000 per year for each family. If Medicare for everyone was instituted, the average cost of health care would be $6,000 per year.
If the Republicans win control of Congress in November, they have stated that they would raise the age for getting Social Security benefits to 70. Our Senator Murkowski has voted against the Health Care reform bill and has stated that she will vote to have it scrapped. Is she planning on opting out of her Federal health care? She has said she will also vote to destroy (privatize) Social Security.

A little unpublicized fact is that Social Security has nothing to do with the Federal deficit. It is a self –sustaining program. What Congress should do is raise the payroll tax cap for the wealthiest Americans in order to strengthen the Social Security financial structure.

Fifteen million working men and women are unemployed; it would be 26 million if the underemployed were counted. Yet Republicans in Congress have repeatedly blocked efforts to create jobs and rebuild our economy. They have denied Unemployment benefits repeatedly and yet as I recall, unemployment is one of the payroll taxes that are taken out of one’s paycheck.

What this country really needs is another FDR to start programs like the WPA (Works Progress Administration) to start working on the infrastructure of our country. We need bridges fixed so they don’t fall down; we need railroads built to cross this country so we would use less gas; we need to invest in wind, water and solar power; we need to start manufacturing products again and we need to stop letting foreign countries bring their products into this country without paying taxes on them. We need to penalize American companies that take their manufacturing overseas.

Please let your members of Congress and the President know that is what they should be doing.

Lilacs

After 13 years of living in this house, my lilac tree has finally bloomed, and most spectacularly. My living room is redolent in the sweet aroma. My mother used to love lilacs and now so do I.
I can hardly take credit for this miracle since I did nothing botanically creative to cause it. So I don't know why I am blithering about it. I am just happily relishing the sweet aroma and heavenly color of these beautiful blooms.
They take my mind ( for a second or two) off the destruction of the Gulf of Mexico.

I can't get it through my thick head that the people, who are closest to and intimately effected by this spill are the people who are clammoring for more drilling in the Gulf. What is wrong with these people? They can see, feel, smell and taste this destruction and yet they must want more. They don't seem to understand that altho they may make some little money by working out there, they are destroying their bodies and will probably die young and their children and children's children will be effected forever. How can people be so dumb?

Will they ever learn to vote for their own interests rather than what some slimy politicians tell them to do?

Afghanistan forever !! Better than oil

Now we know why we are in Afghanistan and are not likely to leave it in this century !!
It turns out that there is a 'goldmine' of minerals under their soil.

The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

The whole world covets this mineral plethora and we are not about to let anyone else
get their hands on it.

I was a defacto supporter of Obama. My first choice was Hillary but when she supported him, I had no other choice. I was adamant about having to go through another four years with another Republican. However, although other people thought they were supporting a liberal, with Obama, I looked at the people who were his staff and I realized, we were being bamboozled. But what were the choices?
I have recently discovered that there was going to be another assault on Social Security and Obama was going to push it. His thinking is to be the first to hit Social Security to soften the blow when the Republicans slam it.

To my mind, having this, a Democratic President, wanting to cut Social Security is
outrageous. There is a notion that Social Security contributes to the federal deficits and that cutting benefits will take care of this problem. This is not true. Cutting Social Security Benefits will have no impact on the deficit problem, and all those in power know this. Social Security has a massive surplus now of $2.5 trillion and by 2023 the surplus will be over $4 trillion . Does this sound as if it is going broke? The money that you contribute to Social Security, the FICA is not a tax, it is involuntary savings and it belongs to the people and not to the government.

In truth, Social Security is fiscally responsible. By law, it cannot spend money that it does not have. Social Security could cover three-quarters of benefits until 2083, when people born today will be 73.

Elena Kagan

I don't think that it is anyone's business about Kagan's sexuality. Just because she is 50 and unmarried doesn't make her a lesbian.
I could have been 50 and unmarried if I hadn't met a man who turned me on. It was a wonderful 25 years and then he died. I've been alone for 17 years and lonely but it still hasn't turned me into a lesbian.
I am not crazy about Obama's pick for the Supreme Court because I don't think she is a liberal but then neither is Obama and I voted for him.

Deleted from Sr. Voice column

The following was deleted from my column in the Senior Voice May 2010:
For those tea baggers, who are screaming about having to pay taxes, they don’t seem to understand that the average tax refund this year is 10% higher than last years, and they are paying the lowest rates in years. If we didn’t pay taxes, we would have no money to pay firemen, police, to have clean water and effective sewage and garbage disposal, to get cheap mail delivery, to have public transportation and all the other things that civilized people want and need.
I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that there are people who are saying that they don't want good health care. These must be the healthiest people in the world or they already have good health care or the money to buy good health care, or they think that they will never get sick !

Laura Bush, Librarian?

"Laura Bush is suggesting she, her husband, and several aides were poisoned during a 2007 visit to Germany for the G8 summit --in the former first lady's memoir, "Spoken from the Heart."
I think Laura Bush has gone over the hill. Too many years of being in bed with her nutcase husband.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

On a congressional note, I thought you might be interested in knowing that Senator Begich voted for extending Unemployment benefits, temporarily increasing Medicare payments to physicians and for everyone in our state getting medical health insurance. Senator Murkowski and Congressman Don Young voted against these benefits for Alaskans.

Good Health Care

I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that there are people who are saying that they don't want good health care. These must be the healthiest people in the world or they already have good health care or the money to buy good health care.
I have struggled through my whole 81 years trying to avoid hard work and yet the worst job I have ever had has afforded me the best health care in this world, hopefully for the rest of my life.

Myths

Some of the myths that Fox Fake News watchers believe is that health care will be rationed. I wonder that they don't realize that the insurance companies are already rationing their care by denying them insurance for pre-existing conditions and by kicking them off the insurance rolls when they get ill; and by raising their premiums to prices that the insured can't afford; and by sponsoring lying media ads; and by lobbying (buying off congressmen so that they don't vote against anything the insurance companies want); and by calling any health care Socialized Medicine; and by allowing the Suprememe Court to say that corporations are people!
How can people be so stupid?

More lies

Now, we learn that the drug companies had gotten a subsidy from the Feds for giving seniors their needed medications and then used that subsidy as a deduction on their Federal taxes. Double dipping at its finest ! However they will not be able to do that anymore with the new Health Care insurance benefit.
I wonder what else we haven't been told about these lying insurance and pharmaceutical companies companies.

now with the new Health Care Insurance benefit.

Health Care

How could anyone prefer those rapacious insurance companies, who's CEO's
grab billions in salaries and bonuses, over a government run, low adminsitrative fee, health care plan? I can only assume that they know nothing about the Governement's plan since they only watch the right.-wingers biased "news" programs
and don't read articles that articulate the plans.
My only regret is that the benefits in the Government's plan don't start
sooner.

Health Insurance

It is too bad that some people, who profess to not understanding the new
Health care bill, haven't learned to read. Because if you can read you will see that
this new law benefits more than 90% of the nation. Among other things, it disallows the ability of insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, it bans the ability of insurers from dropping coverage when someone is diagnosed with a condition that requires expensive treatment. The law also cuts the prices of Medicare prescription drugs by 50% when a patient is in the ubiquitous "donut hole" or gap in benefits. It allows parents to keep their children on their insurance until they become 26 years of age. The law also increases subsidies to purchase health insurance to low and moderate income people. Covers preventive services; in 2011, seniors in Medicare will receive free annual check-ups with no co-payments for mammograms, colonoscopies and other preventive screenings; Provides up to 35 % tax credits to small business that offer health care coverage; and creates a new and independent health insurance appeals process for consumers.
And the law provides a 10% increase in Federal Medicare payments to primary care doctors.
I'll admit that this law is not the panacea that we were expecting but it will be
changed gradually until we finally have health care for everyone, as all the rest of the civilized world has.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Well, we finally got this aenemic health care program started, children will have to wait 6 months before they will not be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and they can stay on their parents policy until they turn 26 years old. After Sept. 2010, adults will not be kicked off their insurance plan if they should get sick. In nine years, the year 2019, 32 million people will have health insurance coverage. Whoopee!! That is if the conservative Republicans in Congress, don't get to shoot the whole program down. Believe me, they will if they ever get control of Congress again.

Could someone please tell me why the people on the Part D Medicare Drug program have to keep on paying their premiums, after they and the insurance companies have spent
$2,830, and then are in the insurance (donut hole) gap, when the insurance companies drop out of the enture program and pay no more benefits? But those wonderful CEO's will still be making their billion dollar salaries.
If this is fair, then I'm a freakin' fairy !

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Why are these Republican conservatives screaming about the cost of this healthcare bill yet they didn't seem to mind when they authorized George W. Bush to spend billions and put us in this horrendous debt with an illegal war. Bush just spent the money and didn't even put the war's expenses in the budget !!

Friday, March 19, 2010

I am eagerly awaiting the Sunday Health Care vote. I absolutely despise these insurance company liars, telling us that we can't afford a health care bill.
We can't afford to NOT have a decent health care bill, and shame on these congressmen and women, who have their own health insurance and yet they deny everyone else from getting good insurance too. The hypocracy is unbelievable.
This bill will not be the one that will solve all our problems but it will be a start. When Medicare was first enacted it did not solve all the problems but it was a start and we now have decent insurance that we can live with.
This bill will stop insurers from excluding people for pre-existing conditions and prevent them from arbitrarily dropping policy holders. It will allow dependent children to remain on their parents health policies until age 26. Federal subsidies would be provided to help people with incomes up to 400% of the poverty level
($129,000, for a family of 5) to cover the mandatory insurance.
If this bill doesn't pass we will be in deep trouble, which might make us lose the Presidency, which would be a disaster at the Supreme Court. Think!!

health care reform

These are the pertinent facts about the HealthCare bill floating around Congress:
1. guaranteeing insurance access to people 55-64
2.prohibiting insurers from, denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions
3.expanding home & community based services
4.ending lifetime caps in benefits
5.providing tax credits to small businesses
Whats not to like about this? Granted, the bill could use more good points but it is a Start !
It can be revised and get more benefits put in it, but with the state of this Congress and all the naysayers, we are lucky to get this much.

Greedy Insurance company CEO's

I despise these insurance company liars telling us that we can't aford a health care bill.
Well, I say, we can't afford to not have a decent health care bill, and shame on these congressmen and women, who have their own health care, denying good healthcare for
everyone. They won't go to heaven on the money they take from the greedy insurance
companies. In fact, I hope they go the other way and soon.

snow

You cannot imagine the amount of snow we have had in the last four days. The paths that the dogs had made in the yard are all gone and the dogs can't get out to do their stuff. I guess I'll have to get a shovel and make them a new path. When I opened the back door this morning the wind was blowing the snow around so hard that I couldn't even see the fence.
Its a good thing I did some shopping five days ago. I can't get out of my driveway. Waiting for the guys to come clear it out for me.
When I took my garbage can out to the end of the driveway, in the driving snow, I looked back and saw that I had been dragging it in an arc instead of straight out !
Some "good samaritan" brought it back in for me and I don't even know who it was. I'm not going out there again to get my mail until they clear my driveway again.
Enough about snow for now.
Obama is showing some spirit now but its probably too late. He's really been wishy-washy about putting the terrorist on trial in New York. Once he made the decision, he shood have stuck with it. I think the people of NY want to see him go on trial right there where he caused the damage.
And isn't it a shame that in the eight years since the disaster there is still a huge hole where those two buildings were. If I were back in NY, I think I would have been screaming my head off at the Mayor and writing letters every day to get something built there.

Wake up, Obama

I am so disappointed and disheartened by the man I voted for. He is worse than his predesessor bacause he has not done what he has promised he would do. He is intelligent but he is not street smart. He has not yet learned that no matter what he does, no Republican is going to vote for anything he wants. A three year old child would have gotten that message by now. If he doesn't show some backbone and start using the power he has, he will not have another term and he might not even finish this term.
Obama is a great speaker but he is obviously not a doer. He doesn't know how to turn his words into acts. It is not his fault that the Supreme Court is destroying our Constitution but it is his fault that he is idly standing by and letting them do it.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Are the people of Mass. so stupid that they would elect a man who is the antithesis of Ted Kennedy and refutes everything Kennedy stood for? They are typical of the people who say, I've got mine so screw the rest of you.
Mass. has one of the best health care systems in the US.
I just guess they want a good looking Senator, who allows half-naked pictures of himself to be published in magazines.
But maybe Obama has brought this on himself for not helping Coakley sooner. Maybe this will wake him up so he can start using the cojones he was born with. He has got to realize that the Repubs will never give him one vote. Forget about bi-partianship. It doesn't exist in this Congress.

Monday, January 18, 2010

health care reform

It seems to me that the only people who are against health care reform are the people who already have good health insurance. "I've got mine, so screw you !" just like our esteemed senator Murky.

Medicare Part D medications

To the people who obviously do not understand what the Medicare Part D "donut hole" (gap in services) is, I would like to explain. When you and the insurance company you signed up with have together paid $2,800 in the cost of your medications, then the insurance company drops out and you, alone have to pay the full cost of your medications.

You still have to pay the monthly premium you agreed to, but the insurance company just sits back and laughs. That is the "donut hole" and you are in it until you have paid another $3800 for your medications only.

If you get to that point, the federal government will then pay 95% of the cost of your medications and you will only have to pay 5%. However, this only continues until December 31st, when you start all over again.

If you think this is fair, good luck.
